Discounting: Does it Help or Hurt?

Many of us have seen or used coupons and window signs giving customers a chance to take advantage of discounts (more often, we see them for shirts or dry cleaning). In my experience, I have found that when new customers come in to take advantage of the discount, they do not become a repeat customer.

There is a very small market of people who use dry cleaning services.  However, the margin on households is much larger and so is the market.  Everyone owns at least one if not all of the following:

    • Comforter                     Blankets
    • Sheets                        Table Linens
    • Sleeping Bags              Drapes
    • Feather Pillows             Uggs
    • Futons                         Horse Blankets and more!

Here’s an idea to consider in lieu of coupons and window signs. Use your marketing budget to educate your customers on any and all of the products (mentioned above) and services that they may not be aware of. Many customers may not be aware of why they should clean certain household items that contain bacteria. The customers already trust you with their dry cleaning needs, so they are your target market and will provide the best opportunity for continuous business.

Although coupons and window signage on discounts does work in the short term, I believe educating your existing (and repeat) customers will help you profit in the long run.
